Responsible Sourcing
In today’s global economy, where your materials come from is as important as what you produce. Regulators, investors, and markets demand traceability, transparency, and ethical sourcing; particularly in sectors like precious metals, diamonds, and critical minerals.
At AKW Consultants, we help you embed OECD-aligned frameworks that ensure every transaction upholds human rights, regulatory compliance, and environmental responsibility, from mine to market.
Challenges
Key Challenges in Responsible Sourcing
Traceability Gaps
Fragmented and inconsistent supplier data weakens end-to-end chain-of-custody verification, limiting visibility across the supply chain.
CAHRA Exposure
Operations linked to Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (CAHRAs) heighten the risk of contributing to conflict financing, sanctions breaches, and significant reputational damage.
ASM Complexity
Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is often informal and unregulated, increasing exposure to risks such as child labour, unsafe working conditions, and mercury usage, which complicates compliance efforts.
Supplier Maturity Variability
Inconsistent implementation of due diligence standards across suppliers creates significant challenges in onboarding, monitoring, and maintaining compliance consistency.
Verification Complexity
Establishing reliable proof of origin, ultimate beneficial ownership (UBO), and transport routes remains highly complex without robust systems, validated documentation, and specialised expertise.
How We Help
Our Responsible Sourcing Solutions
Policy and Supply Chain Design
We develop comprehensive sourcing frameworks aligned with OECD Guidance, UAE Good Delivery standards, LBMA, and RJC requirements. Our approach includes defining risk indicators, escalation protocols, and supplier onboarding criteria, while also mapping supply chains to ensure full visibility of stakeholders, risks, and required compliance documentation.
Site-Based Due Diligence
We conduct on-the-ground assessments of suppliers and mine sites in high-risk jurisdictions to validate compliance in practice, not just on paper. This includes physical verification of sourcing, storage, and logistics facilities, as well as structured interviews with local stakeholders and employees to identify governance gaps and hidden operational risks.
CAHRA Risk Assessment
We help organisations identify both direct and indirect exposure to Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (CAHRAs) and assess associated regulatory and reputational risks. Our work includes developing mitigation strategies aligned with OECD standards, enabling responsible engagement in complex and fragile sourcing environments.
Responsible Diamond Compliance
We support full compliance with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and the World Diamond Council System of Warranties, ensuring integrity across the diamond supply chain. Our advisory also aligns with Dubai Diamond Exchange requirements and Responsible Jewellery Council standards to strengthen assurance and traceability.
Critical Minerals Frameworks
We design and implement compliance frameworks for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, addressing ESG, biodiversity, and climate-related risks. Our solutions also prepare organisations for evolving EU and US disclosure requirements linked to energy transition supply chains.
Capacity Building & Training
We deliver targeted training programmes to strengthen internal capability on OECD guidelines, ASM-related risks, and documentation standards. This includes audit readiness support for LBMA, DMCC, and Ministry of Economy inspections, along with practical mock audits and supplier onboarding simulations to ensure operational readiness.
Recognised Authority in Governance & Integrity
AKW is a UAE Good Delivery Auditor under the Emirates Bullion Market Committee, trusted for its leadership in compliance, governance, and integrity within regulated commodities markets.
Proven Global Risk Expertise
We have delivered compliance and risk assessments across high-risk jurisdictions including Ethiopia, Mali, Peru, Rwanda, and Venezuela, enabling clients to operate confidently in complex environments.
Trusted by Regulators & Institutions
Our work supports regulated industries through whistleblower frameworks and integrated AML/ESG compliance systems, with recognition linked to global regulatory bodies including the U.S. SEC.
Innovation in Traceability
We pioneered a Digital Fingerprint AI solution for gold bar verification, enhancing transparency, authenticity, and supply chain assurance.
On-the-Ground Industry Engagement
We actively work with ASM cooperatives, banks, and public-private initiatives to strengthen responsible sourcing and formalise high-risk supply chains.
Integrated Compliance Solutions
We combine responsible sourcing, AML, ESG, and regulatory compliance into unified frameworks for miners, refiners, and traders.
Frequently Asked Questions
Still have questions?
If your question wasn't addressed, we're happy to provide further clarification, reach out to us for assistance.
What is responsible sourcing?
It is the process of ensuring that raw materials are sourced ethically, sustainably, and transparently, with safeguards that protect human rights, communities, and the environment across the supply chain.
What are CAHRAs, and why are they important?
Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas (CAHRAs) are regions exposed to heightened risks of human rights abuses, corruption, and conflict financing. Sourcing from these regions requires enhanced due diligence, including site-level verification and strengthened risk controls.
What is the difference between regular due diligence and enhanced due diligence (EDD)?
Regular due diligence focuses on verifying supplier legitimacy, origin, and ultimate beneficial ownership (UBO). Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) applies to higher-risk scenarios and includes deeper investigations, direct engagement with suppliers, and multi-source verification of claims and documentation.
Are OECD steps mandatory in the UAE?
Yes, for gold refiners and recyclers, all five OECD due diligence steps are required. Other entities in the precious metals supply chain are expected to implement at least three steps, in alignment with UAE regulations and global best practice frameworks.
Can you help onboard ASM suppliers responsibly?
Yes. We support responsible onboarding of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) suppliers through structured risk assessments, capacity building, and formalisation strategies, including in high-risk and CAHRA environments.
What is Annex II of the OECD Guidance?
Annex II outlines serious risk indicators such as forced labour, child labour, conflict financing, and corruption. Companies are required to identify, assess, and address these risks through clear policies and corrective actions in their sourcing frameworks.
